Assignment brief
Purpose of this assignment
On successful completion of this unit a learner will:
Understand elements of control systems and their performance
Scenario:
The aim of this assessment is to investigate the control of building services systems in a commercial setting for the final assessment for this unit.
Therefore choose a building services control system which you are familiar with, or which you can get information on. It should be of a manageable size, i.e. sufficient enough so that you can describe the system and how it works, large enough so that it contains enough equipment on it to cover the criteria required in the task below.
Task 1 (LO5 AC5.1)
Write a description of the system, e.g. the type of building and its use, main building services systems, general control requirements.
Choose one area of the system. Show a schematic diagram of the equipment and control gear, using standard symbols.
Describe the purpose of the control of that area and explain how it works. As part of the description, you should: Use the terms “controlled condition”, “load variation”, “lag” and “deviation” and remember to show their meaning in context.
Task 2 (LO5 AC5.2)
Provide details of the construction and describe the operation of one sensing element used in BSE to measure each of the following:-
Temperature
Pressure
Humidity
Fluid flow measurement
Continued:
Task 3 (LO5 AC5.3)
The following sketches illustrate the variation of air temperature and air movement of valve position associated with different control systems for a heating system. Identify and describe the type of control represented by each control response below;
M1: (Select/design and apply appropriate methods/techniques)
Compare the control modes in the sketches LO5.3 (i) to LO5.3 (vi) above, explain which is likely to be used in practice and state why, give examples of the control modes to demonstrate your answer, describe how it is likely to be implemented using modern control equipment.
D2: (Take responsibility for managing and organising activities)
Explain how each of the control modes in task LO5.3 would operate in your proposed system with variations in load, you can explain with the use of graphs for typical outputs to help demonstrate your answer.
