Paper 2 should be a 1500 word (minimum) historical paper that draws upon No Man Knows My History and other class material. No outside sources. Your first sentence of your first paragraph should be your thesis. You should have three examples with citations to support your thesis. Your argument should not be about the author Fawn Brodie or Mormon Studies. Nor should your argument debunk the religious claims of Mormonism. Rather, you must explain how the first period of Mormonism (1830-1844) fits into a larger historical narrative of American religious history. Here are some examples: Anti-Mormonism is one example in a long history of religious intolerance in America. Mormonism reflects the utopian experimentation that defined America in the nineteenth century. Mormonism is an important precursor to twentieth century UFO religions. Use the textbook and class materials to discuss the broader historical context and use the details in No Man Knows My History to discuss more specifically Mormonism. Remember that Mormonism is your focus, so your three examples should be about Mormonism and draw upon Brodie’s work. But you must briefly discuss (and cite) the wider and/or longer historical context/lineage/etc. in which you are placing Mormonism.
