    Officer Smith accepted a free cup of coffee from the clerk at the local 7/11 store. The Chief made an announcement to the entire department the week before that officers are not to accept gratuities of any kind, and if they do they will be disciplined. Office Smith ignored the Chief and disobeyed a direct order. As the supervisor, what actions would you take and what would you do with the officer involved?

    Scenario 2

    Officer Smith backed his patrol car into a light pole in a parking lot denting the bumper. Officer Smith parked the car at the end of the shift and never reported the damage. When asked about the damage from his Sergeant, Officer Smith said he did not know anything about it. The next day a citizen walked into the lobby and had a cell phone video of the officer hitting the pole, getting out of the car and looking at the damage, then driving away. As the supervisor, what actions would you take and what would you do with the officer involved?

Officer Smith had a similar accident three months before which he attributed to inattention while driving. Officer Smith received a counseling for the prior accident which was documented in his file.     Officer Smith was seen going into the evidence room of the police facility after hours. When he exited the supervisor asked what he was doing and could see that Officer Smith had an item of evidence sticking out of his gym bag. The evidence was a kilo of cocaine that had been impounded and was not checked out by Officer Smith. Officer Smith had no reason for having the evidence.  As the supervisor, what actions would you take and what would you do with the officer involved?

    Maggie supervises Jill. Over the past six months, Jill has had a very poor attendance record. Overall her job performance appraisal is unsatisfactory. How should Mary conduct Jill’s performance appraisal discussion?

    Maggie also supervises Ron. For the past couple of months, Ron has been coming to work late. He has also been coming back late from lunch. Although Ron does not run dangerous equipment, Mary is concerned that he will make critical errors. How should Mary address Ron’s behaviors?
