Section II: Quadratic and Cubic Modeling
For this section, write an essay that addresses the answers to the questions below. Everything including calculations is to be typed. This will become section H of the final project you turn in at the end of the semester.
Use the data set and scatter plot you made for Section I.
1. Find a polynomial equation of degree 2 (quadratic regression) that models the data (add trend line in Excel). Call this equation Yi and include the R2 value. Print your graph with labeled axes, and include the graph in your report.
2. Find a polynomial equation of degree 3 (cubic regression in Excel) that models the data and call this equation Y2 and include the R2 value. Print your graph with labeled axes, and include the graph in your report.
3. Evaluate both equations Y1 and Y2 when x=5 and interpret what this means in the real situation. How does this compare to the actual data in the table?
4. Evaluate both equations Y1 and Y2 when x=10 and interpret what this means in the real situation. How does this compare to the actual data in the table?
5. Graph Y1 and Y2 on your calculator with your stat plot of the data, and compare the two graphs. Using your answers from #3 and 4 and the graphs, which model is better? Explain your choice.
6. Do you think this data is quadratic? Do you think this data is cubic? Why or why not?
