The paper will be about the child as a symbol. You will choose one writer from each of the three periods we will discuss in class: Romanticism, Victorianism and Modernism. The three texts will share the same theme.You will write three, 4 pages, papers for one for each period/text. The papers will combine to make one 12 page paper about all 3 texts.The papers must be in MLA format.
We will use Google Docs to compose the paper. Google Docs allows me to respond to your writing easily and enables us to have live tutoring sessions. It also saves automatically and keeps a record of all drafts so your work will not get accidentally erased. Please make sure you have a Google Docs account.
The due dates are:
● Paper 1-June 5: The Romantic Child
● Paper 2-June 19: The Romantic Child and the Victorian Child
● Paper 3-July 2: The Romantic Child, the Victorian Child and the Modernist Child
Stage one: The Romantic Child
Choose One: A Poem from William Blake Songs of Innocence & Experience OR Mary Wollstonecraft’s A Vindication of the Rights of Women.
Write: 4 pages explaining how the writer uses the child to comment and critique on social, political and/or cultural issues of the time
Use: Secondary sources and materials from the weekly units to support your analysis
Format: the paper in MLA including in-text citations and a Works Cited page
Due date: June 5
Stage two: The Romantic Child & The Victorian Child
Choose One: Lizzie from Rossetti’s “Goblin Market” OR Tiny Tim from Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol”
Write: 4 more pages explaining how the writer uses the child to comment and critique on social, political and/or cultural issues of the time. (Total of 8 pages.)
Use: Secondary sources and materials from the weekly units to support your analysis
Format: the paper in MLA including in-text citations and a Works Cited page
Due date: June 19
Stage Three: The Romantic Child, Victorian Child & Modernist Child (young adult, really)
Choose One: Araby from Joyce’s “Araby” OR Judith from Woolf’s “Shakespeare’s Sister”
Write: 4 additional more pages explaining how the writer uses the child to comment and critique on social, political and/or cultural issues of the time. (Total of 12 pages.) Use: Secondary sources and materials from the weekly units to support your analysis
Format: the paper in MLA including in-text citations and a Works Cited page
