Week 9 Writing Assessment
Assignment Due Date and Time
o This assignment is due Sunday of Week 9 at 11:59 p.m. ET.
Purpose
• The 1993 movie “And the Band Played On” is based on the book of the same name written by Randy Shilts. The movie will introduce the controversy surrounding AIDS/HIV at a time when science and culture were at odds. Scientists were determined to identify the cause and treatment for the disease and stem its spread. Fear dictated much of our cultural response. Our understanding and response to HIV/AIDS has evolved over the decades since its identification, but this window into the ethos of the 80’s will provide some context about how fear and misinformation impact our response to disease.
• Watch the movie before you complete your week 9 writing assessment. This writing assessment will demonstrate your ability to critically evaluate and communicate a complex issue. In the case of ILS4120 Disease and Culture, we will use the movie to respond to this writing prompt:
o Consider how fear, politics and capitalism impacted the government's approach to handling the epidemic presented.
• Good writing skills are critical for success in today's work environments. This assignment will provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate their ability to communicate complex ideas effectively in writing.
Description
• Watch “And The Band Played On“ (2:21:00)– a story of the discovery of AIDS epidemic and the political and scientific drama that surrounded the search for cause and treatment of this disease. Student are responsible for accessing the movie which is readily available through paid online streaming services such as Hulu, Netflix and iTunes or your public library.
• Reflect on the writing prompt
• This movie is based on a non-fiction book, and you may opt to conduct additional research to identify references to support your written response.
• Please make sure to summarize the story line for your audience as well as address the prompt above.
• Students frequently struggle with how to paraphrase, quote and cite. When you paraphrase a source, change the original wording completely. Copied language must be placed in quotation marks and followed by an in-text citation. Provide in-text citations (using APA 6.0 format) whenever you use information that comes from a source, even if you are not quoting the source. APA format requires inclusion of a reference page on a separate sheet of paper at the end. Remember to include all sources referenced in in-text citation.
• The College of Online provides a dedicated writing support specialist. Visit the COE student writing support website to access APA writing guides or make an appointment for consultation.
• If you have challenges with how to research this topic, contact the JWU Library to ask for guidance. Librarians are available through email, chat or for a scheduled virtual appointment.
