Ishiguro wants the reader to feel sympathy to Tommy because many kids are bullying him for his temper tantrums and the kids not choosing him to join a team to play football. One example in chapter 1 is when this girl Laura starts mimicking Tommy’s face expressions “...Laura the big clown... mimicking one after the other expressions that appeared on Tommy’s face as he ran...”. Ishiguro talks more about Tommy’s temper tantrum and how that evokes to sympathy.

This shows sympathy as Kathy was fairly upset with her friend lying to her. Ishiguro continues to use words that show emotion such as "upset, cried, embarrassment" (Ishiguro 57).
