"The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allen Poe
1. How would you characterize Montresor’s narration style?
2. What information do we have about who Montresor is? Consider background, social status, family, etc. How is this information conveyed, and how does Montresor feel about his standing?
"A&P" by John Updike
1. What information do we have about Sammy? Consider not only information he freely gives (such as his age), but also information he conceals behind his sarcasm. Why might he be hiding certain information from the reader?
2. What is the significance of the grocery story as a setting? Could this story have taken place outside of the grocery store setting?
"Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid
1. What is the setting for this story? We don’t get many (if any) details about the physical location, but consider what information we can gather from the exposition.

"Hills Like White Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway
1. What is the significance of this setting? Why is this happening here, are this specific train station?
2. How would you describe the dynamic between these two characters?
"Volar" by Judith Ortiz Cofer
1. This story is simultaneously vague about its general setting and detailed about its specific setting. How does this combination of vagueness and specificity shape your understanding of the story?
