For
this assignment, you will be analyzing "Story of an Hour" by Kate
Chopin (available in your textbook or through a Google search). The
ending of this short story is quite shocking, and is often boggling for
students new to studying literature. In this essay, you are to explain how the ending of the story is
supported through the writer's use of plot, setting, character,
and figurative language (you may choose one specific type of figurative
language, or a combination).
In essence, you are defending the
shocking ending through analyzing the other elements of literature
present in the story and explaining how the story's plot, setting,
characters, and figurative language foreshadow the unexpected and sudden
death of Mrs. Mallard.
You
must make direct references to the story in this assignment. Simply
summarizing sections will not be sufficient. Quote the story in your
essay to prove your point.
Your essay will utilize three outside sources that you will find in your own research, and have in-text citations to go along with those sources. You will have a works cited page at the end. No websites like wikipedia, dictionary.com, or similar websites will be accepted. Those are not academic resources and thus not appropriate for academic work. I recommend you to use online databases to find your additional sources. Any information that you did not come up with from your own brain must be cited, or else it is considered plagiarism.
