Health Maintenance: Macro and Micro
The purpose of this assignment is for you to identify factors at both the micro (individual) and macro (aggregate, institutional) levels that contribute to positive or negative health outcomes. Think of micro examples as something over which you have more control. Conversely, macro is large-scale and are less easily influenced and tend to be embedded in our lives. Identify and discuss 3 micro and 3 macro factors in your life that are tied with your physical and mental health. These factors can either elicit better health or worse. Sometimes these factors can be both micro and macro. For instance, I do have control over my diet, but if I live in a food desert, my options for healthy eating are significantly limited.
As a quick example to get started, let's examine commuting. Long commutes are negative both physically and mentally to our bodies. A sedentary lifestyle puts us at greater risk for obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke and diabetes. Additionally, fighting traffic can be very stressful and lead to anxiety and depression. A macro level factor such as urban and suburban sprawl forces many Americans to sit in a car for hours a day trying to reach work or school. At the micro level, you could go to the gym or ride a bike after you get home in order to be more active. The key is finding balance in our lives.
