Objective: To demonstrate an understanding of and ability to apply key components of cultural competence
For this assessment, you will craft an essay in response to the prompt that appears below. You are required to use course materials-including BOTH assigned readings from Unit 4 and assigned videos from Unit 4-- in your essay; you must cite them correctly, of course. However, you may NOT use course lectures or Outside materials (readings. websites, videos, or other sources that are not included as part of required learning activities for this course) in your essay.
Your essay for this assessment must be a minimum of 750 words in length (not including header or bibliography). It is due via the assignment drop box on eLearning by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday. October 18, 2020. Late submissions will not be accepted. It is imperative that you follow formatting guidelines as detailed in the course syllabus (either 11- or 12-point font is fine) and properly cite any assigned sources you use in your essay.
You are NOT required to incorporate "key terms and concepts" from Unit 4 in your essay.
Campinha-Bacote indicates that the development of cultural competence is a process and that a key consideration in* this process is "self-examination and in-depth exploration of one's own cultural and professional background" (p. 182). In addition, in Chapter 5: "Hallmarks of Cultural Competence in Health Care Professionals," Dreachslin, Gilbert. and Malone argue that the first step in one's journey toward cultural competence is to engage in self-reflection. "including acknowledging one's own implicit biases, perceptual filters, and cnlmrn1blind spots" (p. 144).
Write an essay in which you do this type of self-examination/self-reflection and explain your own relative degree of culture competence using either the "Process of Cultural Competence- (model by Campinha-Bacote) or the "Bennett Model of Cultural Competence."
How does your own cultural background (including country of origin, academic training, religious beliefs, race/ethnicity. socio-economic status, ideas about gender. cross-cultural experiences. etc ) impact your thinking about health and illness and or about specific populations ( based on their own cultural identity)? How does your cultural background impact your understanding of and attitudes innards various aspects of health care including C.A.Ms (complementary and alternative medicine), ethics, death, and treatment options? What are your most significant "biases" and how night you contend with these biases as you continue your journey toward increased cultural competence?
