On page 729 of the Conclusion to The Second Sex, Beauvoir writes: However this may be, there will be some to object that if such a world is possible it is not desirable. When woman is the same as her male, life will lose its salt and spice. The argument, also, has lost its novelty: those interested in perpetuating present conditions are always in tears about the marvelous past that is about to disappear without having so much as a smile for the young future. For this assignment address the following: Provide an explanation of this passage. Make sure to provide text-specific context in your explanation. (What was Beauvoir discussing immediately before and after this quoted passage?) Clearly and succinctly describe an example of your own of an aspect of the marvelous past that existed in the relations between men and women that is gone or seems to be on its way out. In relation to the passage, briefly discuss your opinion about the loss of that part of the marvelous past. What aspect of the young future of the relations between men and women do you have a smile for? Your response should devote at most half of your writing to responding to parts 2, 3 and 4.
