The Cold War (1945-1990) defined world politics for a generation. During that time, the United States (US) and United Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) developed huge and destructive military technology, including large nuclear arsenals. Why did the Cold War not turn hot? What factors prevented a third world war between the US and USSR during this turbulent period?
