This is a list of Public Health Issues that are in the headlines today. Please feel free to pick one of the topics in this list for your Program Proposal. By-all-means, you can identify a Public Health issue that is not on this list that is important to you & report on that topic. If you do choose a public health concern that is not in this list, please e-mail me to be sure it is okay. At the bottom the page there are a list of questions that you should consider when doing the preliminary research to your problem. Answers to these questions will help to guide how you will construct a PICO Question. You do not have to submit the answers to these questions to me.
Public Health Issue
· Tobacco use - cigarette smoking
Questions to consider when researching your Public Health Issue:
1. Prevalence?
2. Burden of the problem?
3. Costs (to the public)?
4. Risk factors?
5. Effect on population as a whole?
6. Preventability?
7. Require group effort to solve?
Preparing to Write a Health Promotion Program
1. Recognizing the problem / Assessing the need
· Recognize a problem that affects the health & well being of a population
· Research & collect data supporting the existence & scope of the problem
· Identify a specific demographic group to represent the population
i.e. a school classroom, a neighborhood, any group that equally embodies the entire population
2. Set goals for interventions of the Health Promotion Program
· Determine an intervention to address the problem
· What is expected to be accomplished (NOT outcomes)
i.e. expectation that all cohorts of the representative population will participate in the interventional program
3. Develop interventions to address the problem
· What different or new variable will the demographic group be exposed to
· How will that intervention contribute to achieving the expected goals
4. Implementing the interventions
· What efforts are needed to put the intervention variables into action
5. Evaluating the results
· How will the outcomes of the intervention variable be assessed
· How can success or failure of the intervention to affect the problem be measured
