Assignment Question
Critically analyse any TWO (taught) leadership styles which you have observed in a defined professional role in your current or previous health or social care practice.
You should also create a SMART leadership development plan to support your own personal leadership development.
Assignment Guidance

- You MUST use the assignment guidance in conjunction with the Mark Scheme provided on the module page.
- Ensure you use professional and formal language throughout your assignment.

- Ensure you utilise high quality sources of literature for this assignment.
- This is an individual assignment, which is in two parts
- Part A is the Essay – 2000 words
- Part B is your personal Leadership Development plan – 1,000 words (500 words for introduction and conclusion).
- This assignment has a total word count of 3500 words.
- This excludes the reference list.
- Your reference list should come after the Leadership development plan.
- You should provide your citations and reference list according to Harvard style.
Part A - Essay
a) The essay structure should include an Introduction, Main Body, Conclusion and Recommendations.
b) You must focus on the taught leadership theories!
c) In the introduction
i. Signpost the reader to the contents of your essay.
ii. Define leadership in Health and Social Care.
iii. You must identify a health and social care setting, which your assignment will be based upon and give some background information to this setting.
iv. If you have never worked in Health and Social care practice, consult the seminar tutor.
v. Outline the professional role in which the manager/leader you will be discussing works in.
vi. Discuss and debate the part played by the leader/manager in this health and social care setting
vii. Briefly outline the TWO leadership styles you will be discussing in this assignment.
d) In the Main Body
i. Discuss one professional role for both leadership styles you will critically analyse.
ii. Critically analyse concepts and theoretical perspectives of each leadership style, based on the professional role you are focussing on.
iii. Give practical examples of how this manager/leader practices each leadership style in this health and social care setting.
iv. Explore any ethical dilemmas within leadership practice in Health and Social Care.
v. Critically analyse the evidence base supporting effective leadership, which you have you gained from your learning of the leadership styles on the module.
vi. Identify and explore the cultural, organisational and environmental factors and how these relate to leadership practice from a microlevel and macrolevel perspective.

f) Recommendations
i. What can be done to further improve each of these leadership styles which you have analysed?

Part B – Leadership Development Plan

· Is individual to you and should relate to your own personal leadership
· development.
· Demonstrates self-awareness in relation to your own leadership competencies.
· Should NOT be applied to the professional role you have discussed in your essay.
· Should be tabulated as discussed in the lectures.

b. Outline the rationale for undertaking your individual Leadership Development Plan, using high quality sources of literature.
2. In the Main Body
a. Justify your individual Leadership Development plan using a SWOT or SOAR analysis.

c. Develop your individual plan using a SMART table.
3. Conclusion
a. Summarises the main points
b. Provides a take home message.
