In Book V of the Republic, we hear Adeimantus say the following: “I would like to know Socrates which of our current governments you think are suitable to philosophy.” And Socrates answers him: “Not a single one of today’s cities could accommodate the philosophical nature. This is precisely why such a nature (the philosophic soul) is perverted and distorted."
If Plato thinks that no city can accept philosopher-kings as rulers, then how do we understand his defense of philosophy as the highest way of life?
Here are instructions to help you in writing your essay responses. Your essay response is meant to be short. In other words, your response should be around 6-7 sentences. Keep it short, succinct, and make it clear that you have answered the question. Notice that there are two parts to this question. The goal here is to ensure you have read, as well as to help you become more focused as a reader and writer. Shorter answers are a bit more challenging, since they require you to be more precise with your language and grammar. Again, this is challenging, but helpful to hone in and develop your capacity to become good writer.
