Discussion 3: The role of individual & group psychology
Using psychological factors to explain individual/group participation in terrorism is a popular approach. This is in part because it is easy and convenient to explain away such violent behavior as the work of irrational “fanatics” or “crazy” people. There are many weaknesses in this approach, one of which is that most terrorists are outwardly normal people, and many have no psychological or emotional disorders at all. Furthermore, an overwhelming majority of people with such disorders do not become extremists and never commit any type of violence. Yet, it seems intuitive that the mental and emotional states of those involved in extremist violence must have some explanatory power.
In your view, what is the role of individual and/or group psychology in explaining organized extremist violence?
Among the psychological pathologies discussed in the textbook, which one(s) stand out to you as the most viable explanations, and why?
