My social problem: mental health awareness
1. Problem Assessment Due Date : 20 Feb 2025
In this assignment, you will select a social problem that you are passionate about related to your capstone project. You will write a critical analysis, using a social work rights-based analysis of the social problem from the perspective of 3 countries (The United States, another global north country, and a global south country).
A. Define the Social Problem
- What is the social problem? Connect this social problem to the specific SDG(s). Include current data on the problem.
- From the perspective of the 3 chosen countries.
- Draw on international and/or national definitions where appropriate.
- Include a global organization such as International Federation of Social Workers, World Health Organization, UNWomen, International Office of Migration, or World Health Association.
B. Who is impacted by the social problem?
Include statistics such as prevalence rates and other factors associated with the population affected by the problem, such as socio-economic factors, racial/ethnic factors, gender, etc. Include any secondary populations that are impacted as well.
C. When did this social problem first occur and how did it change over time?
D. Why does this problem continue to persist? Use of theory and empirical research is required.
E. Discuss any similarities and/or differences between the 3 chosen countries.
F. To be incorporated into the paper:
- What human rights convention is this issue connected to? Incorporate a specific human rights convention.
- Incorporate any relevance to Economic, Social, Political, and/or Environmental Justice where applicable.

- APA style is required – use the Sample Student Paper format as found in the 7th edition of the APA Publication Manual, pp. 61-67, as a guide.
- The paper should be at least 15 pages in length, excluding the Title Page and References page.
- At least 15 different sources must be used, to include statistics and other documentation, to support your assertions.

2. Policy Analysis (10%) – Due 3/10Content
Pick two countries to work on this paper. Identify a policy for each country that is designed to alleviate the social welfare problem you discussed in the problem assessment. The policy could be a law, regulation, executive order, court decision, or practices within an agency or organization.
A. In one sentence, specifically state the problem and identify the two countries that experience this problem.
B. Identify the current policy that is designed to address the social problem in the respective countries.
C. How did the policy you’ve identified come to be enacted?
- What groups or individuals influenced the enactment of the policy?
- What values form the basis of the policy?
- How does this policy differ from the earlier solutions?
D. What have been the challenges or issues related to the implementation of this policy in the respective countries? Explain using scholarly evidence and outcome research.
E. To be integrated into the paper, considering Human Rights and Social Justice:
- Do you think the policy you’ve identified advances human rights and/or social justice from a social work perspective? Incorporate IFSW policy and NASW Social Work Speaks in this discussion where appropriate.
2. How is the SDG(s) (Sustainable Development Goals) highlighted in your problem assessment addressed in the policy?
3. Using a social work rights-based approach (Gatenio-Gabel), critique how the two countries are similar and/or different in addressing the social problem.
