Assignment Instructions: Researching a Scientist Demonstrating CUDOS Principles
Objective: Research a prominent scientist who exemplifies the CUDOS principles—Communism, Universality, Disinterestedness, and Organized Skepticism—and create a PowerPoint slide that highlights their contributions and peer recognition.
Instructions:
Choose a Scientist:
- Select a scientist who has made significant contributions to their field and exemplifies the CUDOS principles. You might consider figures such as Richard Feynman, Marie Curie, or Albert Einstein, but feel free to explore others as well.
Research the Scientist:
- Use the Gale In Context: Biography database to gather information about your chosen scientist.
- Follow these steps to access the database:
- Go to Library Services.
- Scroll to the bottom and choose SEARCH ONLINE DATABASES.
- Select Gale Databases.
- Log in with your CSM login ID and password.
- Choose Gale In Context: Biography and search for your chosen scientist.
Create a PowerPoint Slide:
- Your slide should include the following elements:
- Picture of the Scientist: Insert a high-quality image of the scientist.
- Scientist’s Name: Clearly state the name of the scientist.
- Notable Achievements: Briefly describe what the scientist is famous for.
- Peer Recognition: Include information on awards, honors, or other forms of recognition received by the scientist.
- CUDOS Principles: Explain how the scientist demonstrates each of the CUDOS principles (Communism, Universality, Disinterestedness, and Organized Skepticism).
- Your slide should include the following elements:
Format and Presentation:
- Ensure your slide is visually clear and organized.
- Use bullet points or brief text to make information easily readable.
- Include relevant visuals and avoid cluttering the slide with too much text.
Submission:
Please take a screenshot or photo of your single PowerPoint slide. You can add the photo using the Insert Image option (see below)
To take a screenshot on a PC: Hit the PrtScn button/ or Print Scrn button, to take a screenshot of the entire screen: When using Windows, pressing the Print Screen button (located in the top right of the keyboard) will take a screenshot of your entire screen. Hitting this button essentially copies an image of the screen to the clipboard.
To take a screenshot on a Mac: Pressing the 'Command', 'Shift' and '3' keys (all at the same time) will capture the entire screen. You should see the screen flash or change before it goes back to normal. The screenshot usually gets saved to the Mac desktop.
Additional Tips:
- Review your slide for accuracy and clarity.
- Ensure all information is properly cited if you use sources beyond the Gale In Context: Biography database.
