***Before you do this assignment, you need to read through the Disordered Eating Highlight at the end of Chp.8 or 9 (depending on which edition of the book you have), which also happens to be what you need to read for part 3 of this assignment. It's quick reading and the online notes are only about 2 pages long.***
This assignment addresses body image and disordered eating. It has 3 parts to view/read. ***What am I looking for? Put all the info together and write 1 1/2 - 2 pages about what you learned and how it impacted you.***
Part 1 - Body Image
View 3 short video clips made by Dove for their Campaign for Real Beauty, which is an incredible campaign about acknowledging and loving your own beauty! I've listed the links and videos below:
1) Inner Critic (If you can't view the video clip, here's the link:http://www.dove.com/us/en/stories/campaigns/inner-critic.html
Some of Dove's video clips have been removed from their original site, but I found them on YouTube. They are amazing! I tried to embed them into our assignment, but in case you have trouble, I also listed the website's link. B/c they link to YouTube, you are probably all aware, that YouTube contains a lot of "other" content such as ads or offensive language that may be visible in the margins surrounding the actual video clips. Please do not be lured by these other postings and please use discretion if your kids are around.
2) Evolution Sorry, I couldn't embed this one. Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYhCn0jf46U
It's a really short video clip, like 1 minute, and unbelievable.
3) Amy (If you can't view the video clip, here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWNYndqFTR4).
Part 2 - Photo-Shop
Look at the difference air-brushing or photo-shopping makes! Has this created an idea of unattainable perfection? Should there be warning labels on all modified photos? You decide!
Video 1/3) (If you can't view the video clip, here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YP31r70_QNM&feature=relmfu).
Video 2/3) (If you can't see the video clip, here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ovpd5O6M8tQ&feature=relmfu).
Video 3/3) (If you can't view the video clip, here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jID2uIFrdj8&feature=related).
There have been some celebrities do some photoshoots with & without photoshop or even with & without make-up. Here's one of the Today Show crew a while back: Fewer Wrinkles, thinner arms: Today anchors get Photoshopped I know this is an old photo, but can you see the differences in the before/after photos?
**BONUS OPPORTUNITY #1!!!**
If you can find another example of a celebrity doing a photoshoot with and without make-up, add the link to your assignment and I'll give you a bonus point!
Part 3 - Disordered Eating
Read in the textbook on pp.248-254 (15th ed=pp.252-258; 14th ed=pp.256-262; 13th ed=pp.252-258) as mentioned above. This reading is not a detailed section, so the reading will go fairly quickly. Keep in mind all that we've talked about regarding energy balance, metabolism, and what the body needs for fuel. I realize that some of the information may be sensitive to some students, but it's important that we learn about it so we can promote healthy eating habits to others as well as a healthy self-concept.
**BONUS OPPORTUNITY #2!!!!**
If you have time to view this last Dove video clip (~6 minutes long) and comment on it, I'll give you +1 bonus point on this assignment. Here's the link : Real Beauty Sketches (and here's the actual link if you have to access it that way:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrHoDJinMQI)
It is similar to Inner Critic message, but presented in a completely different way. Don't make me hunt for your comments in your paper! For me to easily see that you did this bonus, please label your comments under "BONUS" and separately from the rest of your paper. Thanks!! :)
