Part 2: The Research Paper
For this part, you will compose a formal paper that introduces your hypothesis, and then provides evidence from sociological research to provide support for (or reject, if applicable) the relationship you stated in your hypothesis. You will then explain how sociologists explain this relationship based on the research you reviewed for your project. You will ultimately provide your conclusions as to how sociologists would answer the question you started with, and if this answer confirms or rejects your hypothesis. You must cite all information, data, statistics, quotes, paraphrases, and ideas taken from your sources (using APA, MLA, or ASA style). You must include a page with the references / works cited. You will require a minimum of THREE (3) scholarly sources in this final paper.
Additional details on the research paper requirements are listed below:
The final research report for this project will take the form of a written paper. You should follow all of the requirements and formatting guidelines below.
Format Requirements
- You should write your name and the date at the top of the first page. These should be in the upper RIGHT corner of the page. This is your heading.
- A minimum of 1,000 words of written text. This does not include your references page or heading.
- Your written body text should be double spaced, and written in a standard size and scaling font. Size 12 Times New Roman font is a good comparison.
- No title page is required.
- You must have one, separate page at the end with your full reference/citation information for each source. These should follow MLA or APA format (your choice).
- You must cite your sources in the text if you quote them, paraphrase, or simply explain information that you learned from a source. These in-text citations should be in parentheses at the end of a sentence per MLA or APA format.
Writing Requirements
- You should have some kind of title. It does not need to be fancy or creative.
- You should have an introduction in which you state your hypothesis and provide basic context for understanding your topic, the inequality you are examining, and why it matters in society.
- You should then write paragraphs that each individually contribute facts or evidence to support your hypothesis (background and evidence).
- You should follow this by writing out how sociologists might explain (at least some of) the factors that contribute to this inequality (analysis).
- You should conclude by giving a very brief summary of your main conclusions and how your research information either supports or rejects your hypothesis.
- You must have a minimum of three (3) scholarly sources.
- You can use a maximum of one source from an independent, unbiased research organization or a government institution as part of these three, but the other two should come from peer-reviewed publications of scholarly research findings.
- A minimum of one source must be written by a sociologist or published in a sociology journal.
- REMEMBER: Your job is to not just to talk about your topic. Your job is to tell your reader what a sociologist would say as a response to your original question. To know this, you need to think like a sociologist, and to do THAT, you probably need to see what a sociologist has written about your topic. That’s why a *minimum* of one source must be written by a sociologist.
- How do you know if your source was written by a sociologist? If it was published in a sociology journal, then that enough. Even if the person is not a sociologist, they had to write sociologically to publish in that source. If the article was published in another discipline’s journal or an interdisciplinary journal/book, then you will have to look up the author to find out about them.
Your paper must be submitted to the link that will appear below no later than 11:59 pm on the due date. The file you submit should meet the guidelines listed below. Please take care only to upload a file format that can be processed by and read within Blackboard. If you use a file format that does not allow your paper to be displayed, then it cannot be graded and will receive a zero grade.
