PURPOSE
The English language is rich and ever-evolving, with words entering through various channels and shifting in meaning over time. This presentation offers you the opportunity to explore the history and development of a specific word and to share your findings with your classmates.
Learning Objective:
- Understand, describe, analyze, and evaluate the influence of ancient Greek and Latin on the modern English language.
TASK
- Choose a Word: Select any word currently used in the English language.
- Research the Word: Investigate the word's origins, how it entered the English language, how its meaning has evolved, and its usage today.
- Create a Presentation: Summarize your findings in a short, engaging presentation.
- Post Your Presentation: Upload your presentation to the discussion board on Canvas. Ensure that the image is embedded directly into the post so that your classmates can view it without downloading any files.
- Engage with Peers: View your classmates' presentations and respond to at least two of them.
CRITERIA
Researching Words:
For information on a word's etymology or etiology, you can use resources such as:
- Taber's Medical Dictionary (for etiology and etymology related to medical terms)
- The Oxford English Dictionary (OED), which provides a detailed history of words, including when and where they were first used and how their meanings have changed. Wilson College offers access to the OED online via the library’s Online Databases page.
- The Online Etymology Dictionary for additional insights.
Citing Sources: Don’t forget to cite all your sources using APA or MLA style guidelines.
Presentation Guidelines:
- Format: Create a "poster" using a program like Piktochart, and embed the image in your Canvas post. Do not use links that require your classmates to download files.
- AI Use: You may use AI tools to help brainstorm ideas and conduct research. However, if you use AI, you must acknowledge it on your poster. AI should not be used to generate the text or the poster itself.
