As I mentioned last week, the Playbook is designed for multiple users. Most of you in the class will be approaching the text from the perspective of providers, others as patients, and the rest of you as caregivers. If you're not sure which perspective you're going with, please Inbox me.😊 For the assignments below, you will only carry out what is listed under your specific group. First you are given pages to read in The Narrative Playbook, and then some related writing prompts. You will upload your responses to the writing prompts as .doc file to me in Canvas.
For all writing, interviewing, or sharing projects in this course, please only elicit and contribute material that is appropriate and comfortable to share in a class setting--in regard to your own disclosures, appropriate expectations of the other participants, and protection of anyone discussed in the narrative. Make sure to protect the confidential information of others in telling your story and experiences.
Providers:
The Narrative Playbook: Read pages 85-97.
Writing prompts:
Reflect on why you decided to go into the medical field in the first place. What drew you to this work? What kinds of stressors challenge or do you fear will challenge your ability to remain steadfast to your mission? (rephrased from Playbook 96)
Patients:
The Narrative Playbook: Read pages 34-48.
Writing prompts:
Have there been times as a patient when you’ve felt misunderstood or that you have not been listened to? Times when you have experienced discrimination? Times when you have worried about your healthcare coverage or that you have not sought care for fear of not having the resources necessary for treatment? If not, imagine and reflect on what these situations might be like for someone seeking medical care.
Caregivers:
The Narrative Playbook: Read pages 59-68.
Writing prompts:
Reflect on any frustrations you may have experienced with the healthcare system, anything from miscommunications and limited healthcare coverage to failed treatments for the person you are caring for.
