PURPOSE

Ancient Rome was famously founded by Romulus in 756 BCE (when he also killed his twin brother Remus for trying to breach Rome's new walls). The government of Rome existed continuously until the collapse of the Western half of the Empire in 476 BCE, when the current emperor was deposed. The invading Ostrogoths did not feel the need for the symbols of Rome's power and authority, and shipped the royal insignia off to the Eastern half of the Empire, whose capital was in Constantinople. The Eastern half of the Empire continued until Constantinople fell to the Ottomans in 1453 CE. By any measure, this is a long time for a political entity to exist! During this period of well over a thousand years, "Rome" existed, but the government of Rome took three different forms. This week you are going to learn more about the three different phases of rule in ancient Rome: the monarchy, the republic, and the Empire.

Nota Bene: Our story starts in 64 CE, during the reign of the Emperor Nero. The events of Suburani take place during the third phase of Roman rule, the Empire.
